States are adopting creative solutions to improve how taxpayer dollars are being spent to meet the health care needs of their patients, Dan Leonard, president and CEO of the National Pharmaceutical Council, writes in a recent column on Specialty Pharmacy Times.
Louisiana, he writes, is one example after having adopted a subscription model (dubbed the Netflix model) to grapple with its “limited health care budget.”
“The structure of our health care payment and delivery system makes keeping pace with medical and scientific innovation difficult,” Leonard writes. “However, if these creative financing models begin to show promise and improve access for patients, they could lead to further innovation and adoption of financing approaches.”
