Former Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services administrator Andy Slavitt recently suggested nationalizing insulin as a solution to its high costs, STAT reports.
“Today, I recommended to the National Academy of Science Panel on Chronic Illness that we nationalize insulin and make it a public good,” Slavitt said in a tweet on April 4.
Slavitt told STAT that insulin is a non-negotiable part of life for people with type 1 diabetes.
“We wouldn’t sell bottled water at $80 a bottle,” he said.
