MedPAC to CMS: Exempt 2020 Data When Calculating Future Benchmarks

The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) has asked the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to toss 2020 performance data, which has been heavily influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic, when determining future benchmarks, HealthLeaders Media reports.

MedPAC Chairman Francis Crosson in a letter to CMS Administrator Seema Verma said the numbers would be “particularly problematic for providers participating in ACOs.”

“The COVID-19 public health emergency has likely affected—and will continue to affect, at least through 2020—Medicare spending in ways that are yet to be fully understood,” Crosson said in the letter.
