Gorman Health Group Founder and Executive Chairman John Gorman says the Medicare Star Rating System is one of the most significant value-based payment programs available today.
“(The system) is probably the biggest value-based payment initiative, possibly on the planet,” Gorman said during a Relentless Health Value podcast published July 19. “It’s billions of dollars every year that has dramatically impacted the behavior of almost 500 companies that contract with the Medicare program to provide benefits and Medicare advantages.”
As executive chairman of GHG, according to Relentless Health Value, Gorman focuses heavily on Medicare, Medicaid, governance and the Affordable Care Act.
The rating system offers bonuses and rebates after a certain rank, an incentive strategy which has ultimately shifted the behavior among participating programs and providers.
“It’s been a tremendous success in terms of moving quality indicators, especially in parts of the country where we know quality for Medicare beneficiaries was the worst,” “We’ve seen the greatest impact from Star Ratings occur in the deep, deep south and in the Rust Belt.”
