The Food and Drug Administration has given the green light to Pulmonx’s Zephyr Endobronchial Valve for treatment of severe emphysema, Fierce Biotech reports.
According to the report, Zephyr, which is roughly the size of a pencil eraser, is delivered to the lung in a minimally invasive procedure. The device is meant to block out air from diseased parts of the lung while inhaling, but ensures air and fluids exit during exhalation.
“Treatment options are limited for people with emphysema who have severe symptoms that have not improved from taking medicines,” the FDA’s Tina Kiang says in a statement. “This novel device is a less invasive treatment that expands the options available to patients.”
