Dems Pivot to Insulin, Illinois Caps Insulin Prices

January 28, 2020

Democratic presidential candidates during a campaign stop in Iowa made clear their frustration over U.S. insulin prices, STAT reports.

During a campaign stop in Iowa, Sen. Amy Klobuchar attempted to rally support by telling the story of Alec Smith, who died in 2017 after rationing insulin, according to the report, while Sen. Bernie Sanders joined an “insulin caravan” that made its way to Canada in search of cheaper insulin.

“Everything is coming together,” advocate Lija Greenseid told STAT. “We’ve finally caught the attention of the people in power.”

In other insulin-related news, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker last week signed a law that will cap the price of insulin for residents with commercial insurance at $100 per month. According to a STAT brief, the price cap goes into effect in 2021.
