Two bills aimed at protecting individuals on Medicare and private insurance, the Patient Right to Know Drug Prices Act and the Know the Lowest Price Act of 2018, by outlawing “gag clauses” await President Donald Trump’s signature, according to an article by Dr. Roger Klein published on the Hill.
The bills were sponsored by Sens. Susan Collins and Debbie Stabenow.
Controversy has surged over gag clauses which allow pharmacies to keep mum on potential savings for customers.
“In some cases, a patient’s copayment may be more than the cost of a prescription medication, making it less expensive for patients to pay cash for the drug than to use insurance,” Klein writes.
Both pieces of legislation, according to the article, received support from both sides of the aisle.
