Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said during a congressional hearing Tuesday that some pharma companies are looking into “substantial and material decreases” in their drugs’ prices, STAT reports.
Azar’s comments are on the heels of an announcement by President Donald Trump that there would be “voluntary massive drops” in prices by some drug makers.
“There are actually several drug companies that are looking at the substantial and material decreases in drug prices, in competitive classes, and actually competing with each other and looking to do that,” Azar said.
The HHS secretary did not name individual companies or drugs, according to STAT.
Responding to Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s questioning exactly which companies were considering the price drugs, Azar said companies are “working right now with the pharmacy benefit managers and distributors” over concerns they might be “discriminated against for lowering their price … .”
