The Methods Guide for Comparative Effectiveness Reviews intends to
improve the transparency, consistency, and scientific rigor of this
work, which consists of systematic reviews of existing research on
effectiveness, comparative effectiveness, and comparative harm of
different health care interventions. The original chapters have been posted for review in the draft guide,
which intends to be a live document, revised according to public and
peer comment and ongoing evidence. Two new chapters have recently been
added:
- Principles for Developing Guidance for Comparing Medical Interventions
- Grading the Strength of a Body of Evidence when Comparing Medical Interventions

AHRQ Announces Intent to Publish Grant and Contract Solicitations for Comparative Effectiveness Research (CER) Projects with Funds from
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). ARRA funding will focus, initially, on 14 priority conditions
established by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human
Services. Funding Opportunity Announcements soliciting research grant
applications for CER will provide $148 million for evidence
generation. This includes $100 million for the Clinical and Health
Outcomes Initiative in Comparative Effectiveness (CHOICE), a new,
coordinated, national effort to establish a series of prospective
pragmatic clinical comparative effectiveness studies that measure the
benefits treatments produce in routine clinical practice and will
include novel study designs focusing on real-world and
under-represented populations (children, elderly, racial and ethnic
minorities, and other understudied populations) Also includes $48 million for
the establishment or enhancement of national patient registries that
can be used for researching the longitudinal effects of different
interventions and collecting data on under-represented populations.
Additional grant funding includes $29.5 million to support innovative
translation and dissemination grants for CER, as well as $20 million to
support training and career development in CER. Read more here.

Joint Fellowship in Economics of Health, London. The Economic and Social Research Council, Medical Research Council, and National Institute for Health Research have recognized health economics as strategically important to the UK and are thus offering this joint early-career fellowship. The goal of the fellowship is to "undertake additional training and gain further research related skills, publish publications arising from the Fellow's PhD, and disseminate research findings and evidence their application to the research agenda in Economics of Health." 2-Day Course in Cambridge: WinBUGS in Economic Evaluations, September 23-24, 2009. Course taught by Dr. Chris Jackson (MRC Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge, UK) and Dr. Richard Nixon (Novartis, Basel, Switzerland). "This course is intended to provide an introduction to Bayesian analysis
and MCMC methods using WinBUGS, as applied to cost-effectiveness
