This interesting Perspective from NEJM looks at mortality and cost data from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), which celebrated its 200th anniversary in 2011. The authors identify four eras of value in US medicine. The first 3 eras find that there is increased value in each. The post-2000 era, however, seems to be characterized by diminishing returns, with growth in costs far outpacing reductions in inpatient mortality. (Source NEJM, 6/7/12)
